CHURCH of GOD CHURCH of GOD eW{J Headquarters District Edition Volume 1, Number 3 December, 1964 been eight years since the Pasadena Church assembled on the Am bassador campus for regular services. We're home once again. Ministers Gathering For Annual Conference God's ministers are gathering from all over the world to attend the 1965 Annual Ministerial Conferences. Meetings begin on Tuesday, January 5, and continue until Wednesday, January 13. Headquarters Church Moves Back To College Campus For the first time in over eight years, since September, 1956, the Headquarters Church is now meeting regularly on the Ambassador College campus. December 4 marked the first service held in the new, million dollar physical education facility Vital matters of church organization will be the topics under discussion at special 'sessions of this year's meetings. For this purpose, all Evangelists, District Superintendents, and Overseas Directors will be present. Each district will be discussed and plans will be made for standardization of office and visiting procedures. Each (Please continue on page 8) as 1120 people (an all-time attendance record) assembled for the Friday night Bible study. In making the announcement of the move the previous Sabbath, Mr. Armstrong said, "There is a certain regret in leaving the Shakespeare Club after so many years but it will be very nice (Please cOlztinfJe on page 4) NEW HOME-Mr. Herbert W. Just within the last six months more than two million watts of radio power have been added to The WORLD TOMORROW broadcast. This brings the total wattage up to a staggering TWENTY-FIVE million watts! But even now another important increase is on the threshold. Mr. Armstrong is checking out the possibility of a new door being opened for The WORLD TOMORROW on Radio London. This 50,000-watt station, located on the estuary of the Thames River, would blanket all of the British Isles. It would be the biggest single acquisition of radio time in the history of the Work! Even tho God is shooting His Work forward with jet-like speed, much is still left to be accomplished. "There are more than 23,000 radio stations in the world," said Mr. Norman Smith, radio studio director, "and The WORLD TOMORROW utilizes power equal to the sum total of only 1 Y2 of these. "But all of the others," he added, "are producing mostly trash!" Yes, a long road lies ahead-hun dreds of millions yet to be reached with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Are YOU doing your part? Editorial You Must PARTICIPATE To Enioy by Vernon F. Hargrove Church activities can be loads of fun-if you actively partmpate in them! Ball games, wiener roasts, camp outings, church socials, dances and picnics are enjoyable occasions. God has allowed us to have these in order to learn 1) to properly fellowship together, 2) to have wholesome recreation, 3) to serve our brother by giving of our time and energy in properly planning these events. These are precious times considering the kind of entertainment and recreation we would be getting if we fellowshipped with this society. Participation in church events can be of great value to you! They will help you produce the fruit of God's Holy Spirit in manifesting joy and happiness stemming from the sheer pleasure of living life God's way. But how often is this the case? When asked if attending the next church activity the answer invariably is, "No, I'm too tired," or, "I have other plans tonight." More than a few of you young men don't take the effort to get a date for church socials. Usually you have "legitimate" excuses. But the real reason is that you have not yet conquered self so as to actually give of yourself to others. You usually "mill around" at the socials or "check in" on other groups to see how they are doing. As a result, you are not thoroughly happy when departing from such an occasion! Then there are ladies who attend church picnics. Trying to get some of you women to actually participate in any activity is like trying to pull the proverbial hen's teeth. You seem content to sit idly by and bat the breeze. And yet when the day is over you go home feeling empty. Why? You didn't get, because you didn't give. One of God's living laws is that you get out of anything exactly what you put into it-you "reap what you sow." In the many areas church activities are scheduled clear through 1965. Thought and effort have been put into compiling these schedules. They include all groups so that each will be adequately covered in a systematic order spread out evenly over the entire year. But planning alone will not assure a church area's activity success. Without wholehearted, active participation from you, church activities wjll fall flat. You get from these activities exactly what you put into them. If you go to one merely to "drop in and see how they are doing," you will go home with a gnawing, empty feeling inside. If you're willing to merely sit by and "let the others take part" then you are truly a selfish person. In reality you are unwilling to give of yourself to your brothers and sisters. You'll get exactly what you give. An old farmer once had his milk cow for sale. The prospective buyer asked the farmer, "How much milk will she give?" The farmer looked at him and replied, "She'll give all she's got!" Sad to say this is not true in connection with many of the members of God's Church. You are reluctant to give all you have in active participation in wholesome church activities. Do you want to enjoy the activities a great deal more yourself and also be instrumental in helping others enjoy them? Give ALL you have to these planned occasions of your church area by actively participating! December, 1964 The CHURCH OF GOD NEWS Church Brethren Help ln Huge Mailing Operation As requests for the new, beautifully bound, and extremely valuable book, GOD SPEAKS OUT on the NEW MORALITY approached the quarter at a million mark, mailing of this vast quantity of books became a task of monumental proportions. "To my knowledge," stated Mr. Hugh Mauck, circulation manager, "there is no machine made that will stuff, fold and seal the envelopes used to mail this book. It's a job that must be done by hand." An immediate s. o. s. was broadcast to local churches for voluntary assistance. The result was a true-to-form response of One Body directed by One Mind. Night after night, Sunday after Sunday, the work continued with large crews of volunteers. Senior Citizens Mr. and Mrs. John Geiger helped. Children down to six years old helped. Sometimes entire families took advantage of this opportunity to contribute directly in the burgeoning work of Almighty God. "It's amazing! " declared Mr. Art Docken, supervisor of this mailing operation. "God supplied just the right volunteers carne to help. God supplied inspiring. They really wanted to work number of volunteers each night for just what we needed." and were disappointed each night when the job we had to do. The number of "What would have happened," we we ran out of books. FAMILY NIGHT-A new kind of activity for families of the Headquarters area-giving of their time and effort so thousands could receive new The CHURCH OF GOD NEWS December, 1964 Headquarters Congregation Com (Continued from page 1) to be in our own building on our own grounds." "Years ago services were held in the library building of the college. The library WAS the college in those days," Mr. Armstrong declared! Altho the congregation did not even fill the one main room of the library at first, growth became the keynote. Soon the speaker stood in the doorway between the two downstairs rooms. Next, the stairs themselves became occupied with people. Finally the whole second floor bulged with listeners as loudspeakers carried the words of the unseen speaker to them. Another meeting place had to be found. And so it was that in September of 1956 the Headquarters congregation moved to its new home, the Shakespeare Club auditorium. Growth continued to be the keynote. A clear illustration of this is the fact that since then the following churches have been raised up to take care of the overflow from the Headquarters congregation: Los Angeles, North Hollywood, El Monte, San Bernardino, Long Beach, and Santa Barbara! But now God has supplied a new and larger meeting place for His Headquarters Church. For a while at least, the church can now expand in numbers without bursting at the seams. The CHURCH OF GOD NEWS December, 1964 Mr. McCullough Deputy Chancellor at Texas Bible Study Record The EI Monte Church was both saddened and gladdened upon learning the news of Mr. McCullough's coming transfer to Ambassador College in Big Sandy, Texas. His position will be that of Deputy Chancellor for the college, and in addition, he will be the District Superintendent of the area churches, Pastor of the Big Sandy Church, and teach at the college. You can see he will certainly have a busy schedule. Mr. McCullough is to have a new home built in a wooded area near the second lake, and from his description, this will be a beautiful and enjoyable area for the entire family. For the past several years, Mr. McCullough has been an administrative assistant to Mr. Garner Ted Armstrong, also teaching at the college and pastoring the EI Monte Church. We will certainly miss his leadership and service, but realize he can be used in a greater way at Big Sandy. Our best wishes go with him and his family as they leave around January 17. San Diego Club Meets in Home San Diego Spokesman Club, Section A, met at the home of Mr. Marsh on October 26. The dual purpose of this meeting was to provide a change in environment and to build up the club treasury. The profitable and interesting meeting was sparked by a lively business session. The variety of topics included, "What Color Will We Paint the Utility Trailer We're Building?" Mr. Scudder, awarded Most Effective Speaker's trophy for a speech entitled YOllr Palltry, exhorted, "Continue bringing food items to each meeting for use by needy persons in the church." Club Director Mr. Schreiber said, in effect, "... this meeting has been very successful and rewarding." Club members added, "Weare very grateful to Mr. and Mrs. Marsh for providing a place to meet and for their generosity when serving refreshments." DEPUTY CHANCELLOR-Mr. and Mrs. McCullough soon to leave for new assignment. Phoenix Brethren Have Get-Acquainted Picnic On Sunday afternoon, November 8, a special, get-acquainted picnic was enjoyed by the Phoenix Church. One of the most beautiful days of the year added greatly to the abundant joy and genuine fellowship of the Phoenix (and a few Tucson) brethren. It is sad to report that many of the brethren did not know each other prior to the picnic. As one person said, "I just never got around to meeting the people 1 didn't know." One sister summed it all up by saying, ". . . this was the best Church picnic 1 had ever been to. 1 got to talk to people that 1 never had before. It seemed more like we were one big happy family. Evryone was so warm and friendly-even the men were easier to talk to." There were games especially designed to make the adults talk to one another which everyone thoroughly enjoyed. And of course, there were games for the children as well. Topping it all off was a hamburger barbeque. Every family brought ground beef which the women made into patties. The men manned the barbeques and soon there was a supply of delicious hamburgers to satisfy the appetites of all. The resultant feasting and ftllowshipping ended a day that will not soon be forgotten. Set in San Diego One hllildred eighty four persons received instruction, correction and encouragement on October 30 at the record- breaking San Diego Bible Study. This new attendance high was complemented by a similar record of fifty seven attending the Escondido Bible Study, October 22. Aiming towards a new record the Church rejoices in announcing the addition of new member Randy Hooser, recently baptized. You will also notice in attendance soon James Michael Webster, new son of Mrs. Carol Webster, and Alexander Olan, new son of Mr. and Mrs. Marion Olano Remember-God gives the increase, and that means both kinds! December, 1964 The CHURCH OF GOD NEWS Weekly Volleyball UnderWay in Phoenix On November 22, twenty brave souls met at Encanto Park in Phoenix to begin the season's first volleyball game. An explosion of movement set the pace as the first few rapid volleys determined which team would get the serve. After a few moments of quiet tension, the air vibrated with the excited shouts of the players! The game was officially begun. Volley after volley mixed with jubilant outcries soon turned up a winning team. Winner challenged winner and everyone had a great deal of fun. This was the first of the planned volleyball actlVltles of the Phoenix Church offering everyone the opportunity for fellowship and the chance to "work out" those stiff muscles. At eight o'clock in the morning the air is cool and refreshing enough to reward even those who would prefer to slumber a little longer, So, why not plan now to be at Encanto Park next Sunday morning and take advantage of the opportunity for fellowship and good physical exercise!
